Isleworth Joins Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program

WINDERMERE, FL – The private community of Isleworth recently became the next community in Florida to join Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program. The Sustainable Communities Program provides a framework with which communities can assess their current status of green initiatives for protecting and enhancing their natural environment. The goal of the program is to achieve designation as an Audubon International Sustainable Community, ensuring they have met the necessary requirements to be certified as an environmentally healthy place in which to live, work and play–both today and tomorrow. The certification serves as a catalyst for citizen-driven planning and community actions, facilitating partnerships when needed to reach the environmental protection goals envisioned in the community.

“Every community can play a role in improving our impact on the environment while fostering a high quality of life. In 2008, the Isleworth golf course achieved the eco-responsible golf accolade of becoming a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Building on the environmental ethic demonstrated by Isleworth Golf & Country Club, the Isleworth Community Association is now taking steps to bring sustainability into all aspects of everyday life. By engaging residents in sustainability activities for the Sustainable Communities Program, Isleworth community leaders are building a strong foundation for the future,” said Sustainable Communities Program Manager Joanna Nadeau.

“Isleworth’s lakeside setting on the Butler Chain of Lakes is home to a spectacular range of wildlife and a thriving ecosystem and allows for our residents to enjoy a vibrant recreational lifestyle. Joining the Audubon International Sustainable Communities Program further enhances what makes Isleworth a great place to live and ensures those assets are protected for current and future residents’ enjoyment,” added Isleworth Community Association General Manager David Kemp.

By joining and participating in the Sustainable Communities Program, the Isleworth Community Association will join five other private communities as a private sector member of the program. There are three stages in the multi-year certification process, during which the Isleworth Community Association will complete an assessment, define a long-term community vision for the environment, choose sustainability indicators as a mechanism for fostering action and measuring success, and implement its plan. The plan covers 15 focus areas related to the environment, and members must choose timelines and measurable goals. After completing a vision plan and reporting progress on chosen goals, members of Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program are eligible for certification and designation as an Audubon International Sustainable Community, which recognizes the dedication, hard work and environmental leadership of being a green community.
