FGBC and Audubon International Announce Partnership to Enhance and Promote Florida Sustainable Communities

For Immediate Release

ORLANDO, Fla. (November 19, 2019) — The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) and Audubon International have partnered up to help Florida communities achieve national recognition for their sustainability achievements with a seamless connection between Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program (SCP) and FGBC’s Local Green Government Program.

“We are excited to launch this partnership. Both programs complement each other in several focus areas opening new opportunities for Florida communities to promote and engage in sustainability practices on many levels,” noted FGBC Executive Director C.J. Davila.

The FGBC Local Green Government Standard designates Florida municipalities as “Florida Green” for outstanding environmental stewardship. There are 99 local state governments and 64 land developments either certified or registered to become “Florida Green.”

Florida Green local governments not only gain recognition and publicity, but also function in a more efficient manner through better internal communication, cost reductions, and effective risk and asset management. FGBC is actively working towards the availability of incentives that are based on compliance with the program.

The partnership with Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program (SCP) takes this commitment further by adding an international, third-party certification program that guides communities through a customized journey to become healthy and vibrant places in which to live, work, and play.

That vision is founded in the three pillars of sustainability: a healthy local environment, quality of life for citizens, and economic vitality. The program is tailored to each community to ensure that its specific needs, priorities, resources, and challenges are addressed.

“We’re happy to work with the Florida Green Building Coalition to not only enhance the recognition of sustainable communities in Florida at a national level, but to also elevate the importance of sustainability planning now more than ever,” commented Audubon International CEO Christine Kane. “We look forward to partnering with many new communities across Florida to tackle the important work of sustainability.”

“There is lot of synergy between the programs that makes the partnership ideal for creating and promoting a state of sustainable communities,” added Davila.

Together FGBC and SCP offer tools for engaging a community in sustainability including assistance with long term sustainability planning, developing indicators to track progress in key areas, resources for green building practices/trends across the state, access to Florida-based green professionals and services, and information on educational courses, conferences and seminars on green building.
